Thomas Duncan serves as the Orchestra Director at KIPP Adelante Preparatory Academy in Downtown San Diego, CA. Since founding the orchestra program at KIPP Adelante in 2005, he has taught every student in the school to play a string instrument. Additionally, he maintains an Advanced Orchestra ensemble at KIPP Adelante comprised of the most dedicated musicians in the school. The group plays for various functions in the San Diego area, including the annual Las Posadas festival in Old Town. Outside of KIPP Adelante, Thomas maintains a private violin and viola studio. He plays 1st violin in the University of California San Diego Chamber Orchestra and serves as Assistant Concertmaster for the New City Sinfonia, a community orchestra based at San Diego Mesa College. He also plays in a string quartet. Additionally, Mr. Duncan holds a BA and a MM from the University of Redlands.
I focus first on correct posture and producing a good tone, and then rote memorization of beginning notes and bow strokes in conjunction with Suzuki literature. I like to have students question and experiment the way they play in order to come up with the best techniques for themselves. I play occasionally with students when they first work on a particular piece of literature, but then have them play by themselves to really hear how they sound and develop.
